Learn to Bee A Keeper in our Pittsboro Apiary

Bee A Keeper is our 90-minute fantasy honey bee hive tour experience where YOU get up close and personal with a real honeybee hive. It's perfect for gardeners, nature-loving families, or the prospective beekeeper.

Our small group bee farm tour introduces you to the joy of honeybees without the details of disease or the cost of a hive. Even if you never touch a hive again, you'll remember it forever.

What You'll Learn:

  • Why pollinators matter in our food supply

  • Why pollinator populations have been declining

  • The difference between native bees and managed honeybees

  • Bee hive basics - residents, bee lifecycle, communication

  • What you'll see in the hive - queen, larvae, drones, pollen, nectar

  • Plus, fascinating facts on how bees tell time, mimic refrigeration and maximize geometry

What to Expect

You’re visiting a working farm. To avoid any City Slickers moments, read our full "What to Expect" about planning your visit.

Beekeeping is highly seasonal and weather-dependent.  Bees are grumpy in cool, wet conditions. To enhance the experience, we reserve the right to reschedule events as needed.

Farm Shop

We don't have a fancy store on the farm, but shop online to pre-order a flower bouquet or additional honey to take home after your hive tour.

T-shirts are available to commemorate your event too!

Risk

Honeybees are generally docile creatures and are enjoyable to work with, but beekeeping has an inherent risk of stings.  All participants are required to sign a risk disclosure & liability waiver before arrival. You’ll receive these forms at sign up.
